With all the turmoil Brenna has been facing about her hand she has been doing some heavy duty thinking. She knows she is going to be very limited for at least the first year on what she can do while it heals. She won't be able to ever again lift heavy patients and that seems to be so much of what a nurse has to do.
With all of that in mind, she made the decision to go back to school to get her masters as a PA, Physicians Assistant. She decided on a PA over a NP (Nurse Practioner) for a couple of reasons but mostly because it allows her to do more things. She has checked into a few programs and they all pretty much require the same stuff. Unfortunately, she has 3 classes that she will need to retake since they are too old to meet the requirements. So, she signed up for some on line classes thru Rio Salado and starts next week. She is getting her transcripts, letters of recommendation and all of that together so she can submit them to the school the first of April for the June 2013 class start. This June is already full but it gives her time to deal with those classes without being stressed.
Cost is going to be close to $60,000 so she is also going to check into financial aide and hopefully get some scholarships or grants. She already has about $30,000 in student loans she is trying to pay off, so we are really hoping she won't have to take anymore of those out. But if she does, she does and it will work out somehow.
What makes me the most happy about this is how excited she is! Brenna was just beaming yesterday and chattering away with all of the possibilites this could open up for her. I know it's a long road ahead and I also know this means she won't be moving out any time soon, but I'm good with that. It's great to see your kid follow their dreams.
